Motorola – History and EvolutionIt’s probably impossible to talk about mobile phones and not talk about the company which started it all. Motorola is etched in history as the company that made the world’s first commercial mobile phone the DynaTAC 8000X. Not only that, Motorola also made the world’s first cellular network as well which was the result of an impressive 15 years of research.
The company started out in 1928 with its first product being a battery eliminator. Although most of Motorola’s products were radio related, it also made the world’s first rectangular picture tube in 1963. Later, Motorola sold off its television business to Panasonic. Also interestingly, American astronaught Neil Armstrong spoke the words “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” on a Motorola radio from the moon.
In the mobile phone space, Motorola continued to innovate and in 1989 made the MicroTAC which was the smallest and lightest model on the market. In keeping with its radio expertise, Motorola also made the world’s first 2 way pager which allowed a person to respond to a message with a standard response. In 1996, it produced the Motorola Star Tac which weighted only 88 grams (that’s light by even today’s standards). Not one to rest on its laurels, Motorolla also made the World’s first GPRS cellular system
