How Symbian Evolved
The modern Symbian OS had started way back in 1980 when it was born as a British company called Psion (Potter Scientific Instruments) which was founded by David Potter. The company developed a multitasking OS named EPOC meant for handhelds. Many versions of the EPOC OS were developed aimed the growing market for handhelds
Interestingly the EPOC 32 was the OS version was to become later on, the Symbian OS. As handhelds started to get more and more advanced, they featured simple GUI elements of which were included in the EPOC 32 OS.
On June 24 1998, Symbian LTD was formulated as a partnership between Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and Psion. After this, the EPOC OS was rebadged as the Symbian OS.
Famous Symbian Mobile phones
Being a robust multitasking OS, it was only a matter of time till mobile phones sporting the OS would be seen. In 2000 Sony Ericsson launched the first Symbian OS phone the R380 which interestingly was the first mobile phone marketed as a Smartphone and also hallmarked as one of the most important devices in science and technology ( by Popular Science ).
Not to be left behind, Nokia followed with the famous and legendry Nokia communicator with again boasted of some revolutionary features like being the only mobile phone which could send a fax (no we aren't joking) as well as seamless combination of the features of a PDA and a mobile phone in one device.
Thereafter in November 2010 , Nokia brought Symbian Ltd and was sole steward of the Symbian platform. Many versions of this Popular operation have been released the latest being the "Anna" and the "Belle" updates which have host of goodness, feature set and user interface- improvements making it a strong player in the mobile phone OS Space
